  1. Concerns 3 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Nov 2018

This ax really is a beauty when you open the box. My concern is after a single swing into a stump by the fire pit, I pulled it out and found an big nick taken out of the edge. I panicked and looked at the stump afraid I had hit something. Nope, same stump I have been using to split wood for the fire pit. Cant figure out how in one swing I put that big of a nick in the blade just driving it into the stump.

I started trying to get it out but it will be a while before it comes out with sharpening and I have not brought myself to grinding it out of a new ax yet.

Otherwise, everything else you hear about them is true. it is a beautiful head that is razor sharp out of the box. The handle is one of the best hung i have seen on a production ax.

  2. Nice compromise between a hatchet and a boys axe 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Oct 2017

First let me say, I bought this to carry in my truck camper, it's main use will be processing wood that has already been cut to length with a bow and/or chain saw and felling or limbing smallish trees. It came sharp and ready to cut right out of the box. Has a nice balance to it whether gripping at full length or choked up a bit. Nice size chunks flying from the cedar log I cut through and yet enough girth and head weight to split some pretty dense oak. Blade held it's edge as it should. Handle felt good in the hand but required a bit of sanding to prep for some Watco oil. Grain direction in the handle was near perfect. American craftsmanship lives on.

  3. Tentative 5 star review on a new axe 5 Star Review

Posted by on 18th Nov 2016

Just got it yesterday, but I bought it expecting good things for my purposes and like what I see. Heavier and longer axes are better choppers, so this would be a good axe to consider if you are going to do a lot of processing--very cold weather, open shelter, etc. The head has a good shape for splitting I think, and has sort of flats at the edge, sort of like a Scandi grind only much broader angles (rather than the more usual convex grind). This should be fine here in the Rocky Mountains on evergreens, aspen and cottonwood, but might be a bit fragile in some situations, like a Scandi knife batoning rock maple knots. It came very sharp with an evident abrasive finish that will get some polishing like any new axe. The extra half pound might hold some people back, especially for less demanding weather, but in a pulk or on a sled, or a short hike into a hunting location, it should be the perfect companion.
